Love you all, praying for you!
There are so many joys that this life in Christ brings. So many blessings, and so many opportunities. Things we can walk in, participate in with Him, that bring joy, meaning, contentment, fruit and effectiveness in our life. Some things God just does and gives us just cause He wants to. Other things, we get what we put in. When we choose His presence, we get what His presence brings.
Have you ever met a body builder – that goes to the gym to lifts weights once or twice a month? No. You’ve never met one. That’s not a body-builder, that’s a couch potato on a guilt trip. Body Builders lift six or seven days a week, it consumes their diet, their time schedule, their sleep schedule, even their work schedule revolves around weight lifting. That’s why they look the way they do. What do they get out of it? Self-confidence and attention. That’s why they do it. This is just for their physical body which only lasts 70-80 years. Of those 80 years the first part is childhood, and the last part – no matter how much they lift – their body will fade. Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t look the same as he looked twenty years ago. At most they are ripped for maybe twenty years of their life – if they continue to put in the effort. But eternity lasts forever.
So how do you get buff in the Spirit and build your Spirit – not just your body? I love the Good News Translation – of I Timothy 4:8 Paul was talking to Timothy, “Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for the present and for the future.” Whatever you are doing to build your body, or build your career, or build anything in your life, as long as it is what God has told you to do – go for it, ask Him to show you how, and He will. But when it comes to building your faith, and your Godliness, building your spirit… I pray that you would be as diligent in it, as you are with any other pursuit.
In a recent huddle – I shared about a Godly young woman who said a striking thing. I asked her how often she used her prayer language? (I just was asking her how often she went to the gym, how often she hit the weights – Spiritually) Now you wouldn’t ask a body builder that – you can see by just looking at them. And it’s no different than someone buff in the Spirit – they are as noticeable as a body builder, and she was – buff in the Spirit, undoubtedly. You could tell by just looking at her; the fragrance, the aroma of Christ that surrounds her, the gentle spirit, the encouraging, word-speaking, truth-walking way that she carries herself, and how she treats others around her with the kindness and love of Jesus. She was as obviously buff in the Spirit - as the body builder was in the natural… So I didn’t have to ask, I could see, but I was just curious. So I asked her, “How often do you pray in the Spirit?” (the gym – the weight-lifting – that builds your faith, and your spirit) Her answer was immediate – “Every day! I want to get good at my language. And I want my son to know it as well.”
Some time ago God gave me a practical truth for spiritual body building. Pray in the Spirit and you will walk in the Spirit. Jude 1:20 - But you dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith – praying in the Spirit. This is how to get buff Spiritually, in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit will build your faith! So what makes obeying so hard - in this “go to the gym every day in the Spirit” command that God gave us? 1) It’s the exact opposite of what makes sense to our mind. Most things God tells you to do, are... You’re praying in the spirit – and your mind doesn’t know what you are saying. Of course, God told us to expect that. But our natural-mindedness still makes it uncomfortable. And 2) the devil will do anything to stop us from going to the gym Spiritually. There are things that God has for you that are spiritually discerned. They don’t make sense to your mind, but they make perfect sense in your spirit. That’s why God wants you to get buff spiritually. Praying that you will Review the PRISM Topic - The Purpose of Tongues in your life. Don’t get all denominational about it. Just read the Word, believe, and do what it says and trust God with the results! Pray in the Spirit – and you’ll walk in the Spirit. When you do, The Holy Spirit prays the expressed will of your Heavenly Father for you through your Spirit.
Here’s what really helped me. Every time I tried to pray in the Spirit – the devil would distract me with some other thought, or something I forgot to do, or something I’m going to do next week. It was embarrassing – how short my attention span was – when it came to praying the Spirit. So God revealed a simple tool to harness my mind, so it wouldn’t interfere with my obeying God in my spiritual workout – praying in the Spirit. So I can get buff in faith – so I can walk in the Spirit and discern those things that He has for me. God told me to “Pray Around The Clock.” As I was praying in the Spirit – I would often be distracted and onto something else by the time I had exhausted even one full breath. But Pray Around The Clock simply means - When you start praying in the Spirit – your spiritual workout – Just see a clock with your mind, and start praying in the Spirit – with your mind focused on 12:00. Pray in the Spirit for a full breath as long as you can go. Then with your next entire breath, focus your mind on 1:00 on the clock. As you pray around the clock – it occupies your mind, so your mind doesn’t interrupt and take you out of Spiritual workout - what the Holy Spirit is praying through you. And if you’re like me, you’ll pray 12 times as long in the Spirit – as you would have done. before. Sometimes I just put my hands on the steering wheel of the car – and pray around the clock in the Spirit as I’m driving. This simple tool keeps my mind from interrupting the Holy Spirit. But how do you know - that’s even doing anything? Yep, that’s what the devil always says to me too. The answer? You know it by faith! Not by sight or understanding. That’s why God told us to pray in the Spirit! So we build ourselves up in our most holy faith. So our mind interrupts us less, and the Holy Spirit can bring what our Heavenly Father speaks into our spirit – to the reality of our life. Be sure that your walk with Jesus is never limited to what your mind can understand. Commit your mind with your mouth to believe and obey whatever God tells you to do... so when you pray in the Spirit – that’s going to the gym - that’s how you get buff Spiritually. The next thing you can do to get buff Spiritually. Soak in God’s Word – You can even Read the Word while praying in the Spirit. (That's just more PRISM Time!) It’s another way to keep your mind occupied so it doesn’t interrupt your praying in the Spirit time – because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Finally, to grow in faith you need to walk in it. That means obey what God just told you. PiVAT before dinner – is a faith workout – every day. When God tells you what you need most from Him today, and the Number One thing He wants you to do today. When you obey Him and do it, you are exercising your faith – you actually believe that God spoke to you during your PiVAT before dinner - and you prove your faith - by obeying what He said. This is the reason that God gave you faith, and the reason that He wants you to build it - so you walk in it. And that means – obey the first thing He tells you. That demonstrates the faith that God is building in you.
Praying that you will pray in the spirit around the Clock. That you will soak in His Word, and that you obey the first thing that He tells you. So your faith will grow – so the power of God can be demonstrated through your life! Praying that you will be buff for the rest of your life. You cannot be physically, but you can be spiritually – and that buff - will last for eternity!
